So I'll probably buy the game, as there aren't many alternatives in the genre.

We realised quite early on that the food system was quite punishing, so we made efforts to make food more generous so that it wasn't so restrictive - but was still in place to prevent abuse of the turn bonuses. So you don't have endless time to just wander around and have to balance between what you want and what you can do (same like every time-sensitive mission, though this element doesn't make you lose instantly).

Well, I'm afraid the food system is part of the challenge/rougelite element - I don't like it too (I don't like rougelikes/lites in general, but that just gives me a push to get every mission 100% at the first try xD ), but that's what sometimes make you move your butt faster and carefully plan your actions.
